I put up a quick about page. Ironically it does exactly what you would think it does, details a bit about who I am and what I do. I thought about calling it a collophon since apparently thats a more appropriate name, but recalled an old proverb from High School English: “never use a big word when a small word will suffice.”
TeamSpeex
After all the excitement over Ventrilo release for OS X I remembered that their public server version has a hard coded limit of 8 users. They essentially force you to rent a server to do anything useful! Luckily though, I came across TeamSpeex, an OS X client for Teamspeak without the stupid limit on its public server! So I will be setting up a Teamspeak server on this machine, and I will keep the Ventrilo client installed for when I need it.
Ventrilo for OS X!
Yay! Ventrilo for OS X has been released! This is huge! Ventrilo has become the standard Voice over IP (VoIP) application in the online gaming world. This means I will now be able to chat with other players, we’ll be bale to stay more organized and have more fun!
Steadman
Steadman is a British band that has twice been signed to major label deals. Unfortunately both of those deals imploded. Fortunately for the world, they have have gone “indie” and have released their entire catalog online. I’ve been listening to them this evening and its very good stuff – maybe I’ll post a proper review later in the week? Nope.
Sony's Rootkit: the untold problem
The whole Sony debacle has been well documented over the last few days. What bugs me more is how Microsoft is dealing with the threat. Instead of attacking the root of the problem, they have stated in a blog post that they will be removing the rootkit with their AntiSpyware Tool. Why is this an issue? Microsoft’s approach is wrong. Their entire approach to security is, and this issue does nothing but affirm that. It shouldn’t be possible to install the Sony rootkit. Yes it is possible to install rootkits through buffer overflows and other shady methods, but these are MUCH more difficult install; consequently, they are much less frequent. The Sony rootkit is passively installed by the user when they run the CD, why isn’t the user notified of this, not even asked for their password in order to modify system files? This problem would never happen on OS X because it would ask the user for their password – something that shouldn’t happen when playing a standard audio CD. This minor difference in approaching security is a big part of why OS X has fewer security issues. Windows might be more securely coded than OS X (fewer buffer overflows etc.) but it invites exploits. I wish the trust everyone architecture could change overnight, it would solve most of the issues we face with the internet.
Simple Theme & Include Sidebar
I’m releasing my theme, I’ve almost completely finished porting it from Wordpress. The file linked here will always be the latest released version, right now I still need to add a few styles (comments things) and make sure all the views are how I want them. Theme requires Typo 2.5.8. I am also going to link up my “Include” sidebar module thingymambober. I made this so I could include my picture on the side, I’m going to make another that will be ajaxified. Basically it will reload the included file on a set delay (configurable in the admin area). Fun fun!
